What you wear is an opportunity to bring personality to your headshots, but I know outfit selection can be challenging, so here are some tips to help you plan what to wear for your headshots.
1. Be guided by what you want your headshot to say about you
You only get one shot at making a first impression, so be strategic and ask yourself how you want to come across.
Pick 3 words that best describe what you want people to remember about you when they come across your headshot, and think about what types of outfits (within your own style) would best illustrate these words.
Want to come across as professional? >> Pick the outfit you would wear to an important meeting.
Want to come across as bold? >> Pick your boldest colour!
Want to come across as warm? >> Pick a soft and cosy fabric in a neutral tone.
Want to come across as confident? >> Pick your power outfit!
2. Use colours thoughtfully
Favour plain colours - loud patterns and prints are best avoided as they can be distracting. (Or if you particularly like patterns, try to layer up a patterned top with a plain coloured blazer or cardigan).
Pick 2-3 outfits of different colours to give you options and variety:
One dark outfit - usually for your more formal or smarter look
One neutral colour outfit - usually for a more friendly / casual look
A white outfit and/or a monochromatic look - usually for a modern and fresh look
Your favourite colour - usually for a more stand-out look, showcasing more personality
3. Pay attention to fitting
Fitted clothing that shows your shape always works best for photos. Looser garment might sometimes be flattering in person, but will broaden you on camera. Choose outfits that hug your body, at least around key anchor points (waist, hips, wrists).
4. Accessorise accordingly
For a corporate look, keep accessories simple and minimal. But if your style is more creative, feel free to accessorise with statement pieces.
One question I get a lot is "shall I wear my glasses?" And the answer is up to you! If, like me, you wear them all the time, then it's best to wear them on all your headshots too. If you sometimes wear them and sometimes not, then why not capture some headshots with and some without? If it's glare that you are worried about, make sure your lenses are cleaned prior to your session, and make sure your photographer is able to adjust the lighting to remove or minimise glare.
5. Stay true to your own style
Most important of all, narrow it down to ONLY clothes that make you feel confident! Forget about what you "think" you should wear, and wear what makes you feel good as it will show in your expression and body language.
